04/09/12 Innovative farming

Today in class we looked as innovative farming and how it affects farmers.
Curtis and Howes talked about how it has decreased labour costs on their farms.
Miss asked us to define these words, below are responses from students in our class
Efficiency Gains
Beau – normally measured by looking at the relationship between cost and earnings
Curtis – fertiliser
Travis – getting better of how you do stuff
Courtney – same as Beau but also included if costs goes down and earnings are flat, of if the cost is flat but earnings go up, the farm has made a gain.
Dylan – Getting better at doing stuff
Intensification
Hayden B – intensification of bugs and to tend animals
Paris – to make intense or increase the intensity of a situation
Braydon P – To make intense or increase the intensity of a situation, eg: increasing the number of animals in the same land size – feedlotting.
Cara – the state of being invaded or overrun by parasites
Travis – how intense it is the you have many crops growing on the land
Quality of life
Beau – personal satisfaction with cultural or intellectual conditions under which you live
Hayden B – how good the life of the animal is
Courtney – satisfying the cultural and intellectual beliefs, to raise farming animals in a safe environment, by reducing stresses and being feed appropriately
Cara – quality of life on a farm refers to both the family and the animal
Succession Plan
Cara – the process for identifying and developing internal people with the potential to fill leadership
Travis – a plan on how to succeed

We also watched a video

We had to define the main points of the video
Hayden – over time farmers have had to increase their produce, due to more demands. They also have many different jobs
Paris – farmers have been increasing their productivity and they preform many different jobs.
Brayden P – less land available but more food needed
Dylan – shows that the farming industry as increased in intensity, while losing land
